Every student learns differently, and the spaces where they learn should reflect that. When Saint Joseph Grade School in South Bend, Indiana, set out to transform a former Spanish classroom into a dedicated space for individualized instruction, the school partnered with Custer to create a flexible, welcoming environment designed to support students across multiple grade levels and learning needs.
Unlike a traditional classroom, this space serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade who receive additional academic support throughout the school day. From small group lessons and one-on-one instruction to testing and specialized services, the room needed to accommodate a wide range of activities, ages, and learning styles.
Working closely with the school’s lead teacher, Custer’s design team developed a thoughtful furniture plan that balanced flexibility, functionality, and a cohesive aesthetic. Through multiple design reviews and updated renderings, the team refined the layout and furniture selections to align with the teacher’s vision while staying mindful of the school’s budget.
A key priority was giving students choice in how and where they learn. A mix of traditional chairs, flexible soft seating, and tiered seating options allows learners to find settings that support their comfort and focus. Adaptable student tables accommodate different group sizes and activities, while teacher and student storage solutions keep materials organized and accessible. Whiteboards provide additional opportunities for instruction and collaboration.
By incorporating solutions from Smith System, Sit On It, AMQ, Steelcase, and MooreCo, Custer helped create a coordinated environment where every element works together. From furniture selection and design visualization to warehousing and installation, the team supported the project from concept through completion.
The result is more than a classroom refresh. It’s a personalized learning environment that gives educators the flexibility to meet students where they are, creating space for every learner to feel supported, engaged, and ready to grow.
