A Workplace Expansion Designed for the Future

When a leading global technology company began planning an expansion of its North American headquarters, the goal was about more than adding square footage. Leadership saw an opportunity to create a workplace that reflected the modern, forward-thinking environment of its global headquarters while better supporting the way employees work today.

Working alongside the project team, Custer helped transform and expand the existing workplace into an environment designed to encourage collaboration, flexibility, and connection.

One of the project's biggest challenges was creating a seamless transition between the existing office and the new addition. Because the original workspace already featured Steelcase products, the workstation environment could be extended naturally, making the expansion feel like a continuation of the existing space rather than a separate building.

While maintaining consistency was important, the project also introduced entirely new workplace experiences. Collaboration spaces, huddle rooms, phone booths, and soft seating areas gave employees greater choice in where and how they work throughout the day.

A standout feature of the project is the community hub and work café. Traditionally, employees viewed eating and working as separate activities. The new café challenged that mindset by creating a welcoming destination where people can gather, collaborate, recharge, or work in a more relaxed setting. The space encourages new ways of thinking about workplace flexibility while strengthening employee connections.

The updated boardroom also plays an important role in the overall workplace experience. Designed to welcome visitors and team members from around the world, it creates a polished first impression while reflecting the organization's innovative culture and global presence.

Furniture solutions from Steelcase, OFS, Spacestor, and BuzziSpace, paired with artwork, biophilic elements, and thoughtfully selected finishes, brought warmth and personality to the space. Together, these elements transformed the expansion into more than additional office space—they created a workplace that feels modern, engaging, and built around the people who use it.

Today, the expanded headquarters successfully blends the organization's global vision with the needs of its North American workforce. By combining familiar workplace elements with new ways to collaborate, connect, and focus, the space supports employee well-being, encourages people to return to the office, and creates an environment ready to adapt to the future of work.
