Custer embarked on an impactful project for Buist Electric, a leading electrical contractor located in Byron Center, Michigan.

The customer was quickly outgrowing their workspace, prompting a building expansion. Custer supported this project by addressing this challenge with innovative design and timeless furniture solutions.

Most of the project, spanning a substantial 31,000 sq. ft., was completed in June 2023. Dan Vos Construction played a crucial role in the construction phase.

Buist Electric's primary challenge was a pressing need for more space. The decision to expand the existing building led to the collaboration with Custer.

Custer’s installation teams have been amazing to work with. During the 2023 project, the crew did anything we asked with a smile. Their team worked hard, was efficient, and went the extra mile on every curve ball that came up without getting frustrated or angry. What a joy to work with such positive, fun, hard-working people on our project.

Amy Guikema - Office Manager | Buist (2026)

Custer provided furniture and design, being mindful to provide a seamless integration of the new space to match the existing furniture solutions provided by our team back in 2017.

The furniture solution revolved around Steelcase products, ensuring a consistent and cohesive aesthetic throughout the newly expanded workspace.

The workspace predominantly features cubicles and private offices. While a few conference rooms were incorporated, the focus was primarily on desks. The inclusion of versatile solutions like Slatwall and Migration height-adjustable desks added to the functionality to the space.

The furniture installation involved significant reconfiguring as Buist Electric aimed to relocate elements from the old half of the building into the new addition. Coordinating this process with the installation of new furniture presented challenges that were adeptly handled by Custer's Project Management and Installation teams.

Key products included Answer cubicles for efficient workstations, Slatwall for flexible storage solutions, and Migration height-adjustable desks, offering ergonomic versatility.

Buist Electric's workspace transformation showcases the successful collaboration between Custer and Dan Vos Construction in providing tailored solutions to address specific challenges, resulting in a modern and functional workspace that aligns seamlessly with the company's growth trajectory.

A Partnership That Continues to Deliver

The success of the project didn't end when installation was complete. Today, Buist Electric's expanded workspace continues to support its growing team, providing employees with a comfortable, functional environment that makes their day-to-day work easier and more enjoyable.

Nearly a decade after Custer first furnished Buist Electric's headquarters in 2017, the original furniture continues to look and perform like new—a testament to the durability and long-term value of the solutions selected. As the company has continued to grow, Custer has remained a trusted partner, supporting additional remodels, new locations, and ongoing service whenever needs arise.

As Office Manager Amy Guikema shared in 2026:

Custer has been a valued partner since 2017. Our furniture is beautiful and functional and the quality continues to prove itself. After nearly a decade of use, it looks and operates as if it’s brand new. Working with Custer makes my job easier. They do anything they can to find solutions to make us happy in our space. As Office Manager, I put out a lot of fires every week. Custer and Steelcase make it so that office furniture is never one of them.

The positive response from employees has reinforced that investment. With ergonomic workstations, thoughtfully designed spaces, and furniture built to last, the workplace has become an environment where people enjoy coming to work. Combined with responsive service and a team that's always willing to find solutions, Buist Electric has confidence that their workspace will continue to support their business for years to come.
